Generally speaking, the main difference between self-publishing and traditional publishing through a publishing house is the division of labour.

Only you can finish your manuscript. But once that is done, oftentimes your publisher will carry out every aspect of publication. This will include responsibilities to do with editing, designing, printing and marketing your book. They may delegate tasks to specialists or liaise with other companies to fulfill their promise to you.

However, this is not always the case.

Depending on the size of the publishing house, their workload and other factors, they may elect to take you on if the division of labour is more agreeable on their end.

If you accept, this will of course be reflected in their charges and the projected royalties you will earn as the author.

Take a look to learn how

"Royalties" is the industry term used to refer to any money an author earns when a copy of their book is sold.

This will always be a fraction of the selling price, as several costs will be deducted before you are able to access any profit. These costs typically include any editing, designing or marketing services, but also the tangible side of printing your paperback or hardback copies, or even hiring voice actors for your audio-book.

If you decide to go through the traditional publishing route, you will be requesting professional help in some or all of these fields and therefore receive a smaller percentage of royalties.

There is a lot to consider, and there is no right or wrong decision. Some people prefer to focus on their art and leave the boring stuff to people with more experience, while others are excited by the thought of getting their hands figuratively covered in ink!

At Milestone Press Ltd we want to give both types of creative individuals the opportunity to follow their dream.

" People respect books that

have been traditionally

published more so . . . "

" I won't have a say on how my books are sold if I decide to ask a publisher to help. It is nigh on impossible to have full rights to my work . . ."

HOUSE . . . "

" I shouldn't trust publishing firms.

They don't care about my work.

They just want to make money . . ."

" Self-publishing is

too difficult . . . "

Take your time. This is an important decision and every circumstance is entirely unique. You may be aware of the process other authors have taken and feel pressure to follow in their footsteps. But every journey is different.

It's about finding the right one for you.

Follow your gut! At the end of the day, you have spent countless hours building your own literary world. If you have reached a point in which you would like to share that story with others, only you know how best to do this.

We can't decide for you, but we can sincerely advise you to take a course of action, regardless of what that may be. If you don't try, you'll never know.

However, what we can guarantee is your satisfaction with your interactions with us.

Our promise to you is simple:

We will always act fairly and with integrity.

At Milestone Press, we understand and identify with your position.

This is because both Company Directors were struggling authors before

deciding to explore the publishing industry.

We don't know everything, by any means, and neither do we purport to.

But we know enough to offer up our experience with the hope of offering you the opportunities we wish we had been given.

We understand how daunting the process of self-publishing is, because we have done it. And we also know that it is not as difficult as some publishing houses make this out  to be. We are on a constant quest to find that next amazing piece we'll struggle to put down.

If you'll let us, we'll try our best to share that feeling with the world.
